Project goals

Discovering the value of the data economy in European food systems.

The project aims to address the lack of understanding of many aspects of the data economy for food systems, in which data is not only a new economic commodity, but also a strategic asset in transitioning to sustainable food systems and a fair and inclusive society.

The project’s goal is to improve the data economy for food systems by expanding its definition, mapping its development, success, and impact, with the aim of creating new opportunities for the EU. Among other things, the objectives are (1) to increase knowledge and understanding of the data economy for food systems; (2) to develop a system that monitors and evaluates the development, success, and impact of the data economy for food systems on relevant EU policies; (3) to identify drivers and barriers and transform them into opportunities, recommendations, and solutions; (4) to test solutions and evaluate recommendations through case studies and stakeholder dialogues; and (5) to outline future scenarios and a timeline and maintain a monitoring system to support policy development and accelerate the desired future state of the data economy for food systems.

Data4Food2030 is a project carried out by EU member states (Finland, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Greece, and Slovenia). The UM FERI Institute is also participating in the project with 24 partners from these 12 EU member states, and the project coordinator at UM is Associate Professor Dr. Muhamed Turkanović.

UM FERI activities

UM FERI will participate in the consortium through the Institute of Informatics, providing technical support for the development of data spaces, specifically as part of one of the project’s six pilots, namely the “Short Food Supply Chain (ZeroFLW)” pilot. The goal of the pilot is to design a technical framework for a data space for the food industry’s traceability, which includes the integration of various data sources, such as databases, data lakes, and data from the blockchain, which is responsible for monitoring the traceability of the short supply chain.
